Langar C of E Primary School's Music Room

Langar Primary School is a Voluntary Controlled Church of England school occupying an idyllic setting in the village of Langar, on the Nottinghamshire / Leicestershire border. The children were previously taking music lessons in communal spaces, such as the library or hall, due to a lack of designated free space. Emily the Head Teacher approached us to help with their long-awaited School music room project, choosing Cabins for Schools to build a bespoke school music room.

Inspired by a garden room, Emily had the idea of an outdoor classroom to be used for music tuition lessons. The staff and pupils wanted to create a space separate from the main building that would be used for music lessons. Having a space designated to music means that the children can participate without the distractions from the communal areas...

Building a Bespoke School Music room with Cabins for Schools

The process from design to installation

Following an initial meeting with Emily at our Nottingham Show site, we worked together to create a 3D design along with a tailored quote which worked for the school's budget. Next, we considered the window and door placement to make the outdoor classroom perfect for music lessons. Additionally, we future-proofed the building to be used in other ways, such as for staff and parent meeting rooms, small group work, and outdoor learning. Emily wanted a modern look and so opted for Cedar external cladding and anthracite grey double-glazed windows and doors.

Emily and the Langar School team agreed to the designs and plans, and one of our experts visited Langar Primary School to double-check the positioning of the outdoor music classroom and finalise the details. Lastly, the order was placed and the manufacturing process began! Within 8 weeks from start to finish, their new outdoor music classroom was installed and ready to use, with minimal disruption to the school.

How has your new school music room had a positive impact?

'The Music Room has had an incredible impact here at Langar Primary School where music is at the centre of all that we do. We have about 6 external music teachers who benefit from the space. However, our music room is particularly transformative for Sarah who teaches recorders on a daily basis!' - Emily, Headteacher

'It's been marvellous. Before we had our music room, we found it very frustrating teaching while students were walking past, sometimes making comments. The children couldn't concentrate properly. However, we now have this lovely music room, and I can whisk them all in there and maintain 100% concentration! Music is very important in school, so it's a marvellous and all-round thumbs up from us!' - Sarah, Music Teacher

Some words from the pupils at Langar...

'When I’m in the new music room I'm able to concentrate better because of the space around me. I think the music room was a great idea because when other teachers take different students to practice spelling, it could get a bit distracting - you could hear them outside. Being in our music room helps me to be calm and think about what I am doing better.'  - Alicia

'It's so much better to practice in the music room. Before, you could hear all of the noise from outside when we used the library. It’s much quieter here - just music! It's unlike anything else, just music, music, music!' - Olivia

'I can play inside the music room and not feel shy that other people are listening to me. I can play with only my teacher listening.' - Martha
