Primrose Hospice's Log Cabin
Primrose Hospice & Family Support Centre is based in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. It is an independent charity and has been providing care and support to patients and families in North East Worcestershire since 1987. They needed more space and so chose our 17m² log cabin with a solar pipe. We designed their cabin with a wider, low threshold door to make it fully accessible for wheelchair users!
We caught up with Jenni Luke, the Children's Team Lead at Primrose Hospice to find out why they needed the extra space, how they use it and how their cabin has had a positive impact on its users...
Could you tell us more about Primrose Hospice, the service it offers, and your role there?
'I am the Children’s Team Lead at Primrose. Myself and the team support children when there is someone in their family who is ill or if they know someone who has died. We offer this support through one-to-one sessions and group work at the Hospice and in the community. As well as supporting children and young people, as a Hospice we care and support hundreds of patients who are living with life-limiting illness. Our professional and caring Clinical Team provide patients with support and will make decisions which best suit their needs and diagnosis. We also support carers and families who have a loved one who has either recently died or is living with a life-limiting illness. We offer counselling, family support, benefits advice, support groups and a living well service.'
What gave you the idea to have a Scandinavian-style wooden cabin at Primrose Hospice?
As our team has expanded, space for us to offer our support has become quite limited. As a result we have been in discussion for some time about some sort of structure in the garden that we could use for both one-to-one and group work. It was actually our COO who had the idea of the cabin – having seen one at a wedding she had attended. She came back and shared the idea and we decided it would be perfect for what we were after; cosy enough to use it in one-to-one work or family assessments, but big enough that it could be used in group work too.
How does the Hospice use the cabin and how has it impacted its users?
'We use the cabin in a variety of ways. We use it as a one-to-one space with chairs and a table in the middle, a space to hold meetings, and we use it for larger group work too. It’s currently used mainly with the children we work with and they love the space – especially the colour changing LED lights! We have held a variety of groups in there. For example, we use it as an extension to our forest school group as it’s nestled into a wooded corner of the garden, and we have used it for arts and craft groups as well as for a martial arts group. We also use the cabin in conjunction with our fundraising events to help us raise the £1.95million needed every year to keep our doors open.'
How do your patients, families and children react to the cabin?
'It has been a really helpful space for when we have had noisier clients as the positioning means that they can have more freedom to make noise. But actually, as it’s quite a calming space, we have also found that children are naturally more relaxed in there. We have had a lot of positive feedback on how beautiful it is and in keeping with our garden but also how relaxed people feel when in there.'
